Sludge Management Plan
Specialty Product Technologies
NPDES Permit No. NC 0001121
RCRA Permit No. NCD041466251
Sludge is generated at this facility from the two separate batch treatment processes for chrome
containing wastewater and cyanide containing wastewater. Settled sludge is also recovered during the
semiannual cleanout of the clarifier.
Chrome containing wastewater is treated as follows:
1. Adjust pH to 2.0 using sulfuric acid.
2. Add sodium meta-bisulfate to revert hexavalent chrome to trivalent chrome.
3. Adjust pH to 8.5 using caustic soda.
4. Add polymer combination. ChemTreat Inc.
5. Allow sludge to settle and pump off to sludge storage tanks.
Cyanide containing wastewater is treated as follows:
1. Adjust pH to 13 using caustic soda.
2. Add sodium hypochlorite to destroy the cyanide.
3. Add sodium meta-bisulfate to destroy residual chlorine.
4. Add polymer combination. Chem Treat Inc.
5. Allow sludge to settle and pump off to sludge storage tanks.
Sludge is stored in two 3000gallon aboveground storage tanks that also serves as a thickener. Final
g g a
dewatering of the sludge is achieved using a JWI recessed chamber filter press. Filtrate from the filter
press is returned to the cyanide batch treatment tank.
The sludge is considered a RCRA hazardous waste under waste codes F006, F007, and D007.
The dewatered sludge is transferred to cubic yard cardboard storage containers with plastic liners, then
moved to a 90-day storage location. The sludge is transported by a hazardous waste shipper/recycler to
a designated facility.
