It was observed that the small grain overseed has been allowed to head (seed) and was shading out the bermuda grass. It was also observed that the aluminum irrigation pipe was leaking at the joints in a low seasonally wet area adjacent to a waste application field. The inspection revealed that the Certified Animal Waste Management Plan (CAWMP) should require the small grain overseed to be removed as hay prior to seeding. The CAWMP also appears to allow higher nitrogen applications to the small grain overseed than normally observed in other plans. A large gully has developed adjacent to the lagoon dike (approximately 20 feet) and needs repair and stabilizing to prevent further erosion and possible damage to the dike. In regard to the deficiencies noted during the inspection, the following actions are requested: 1. Fill and stabilize the trench adjacent to the lagoon to prevent damage to the lagoon dike. 2. Consult with a technical specialist for proper crop management techniques in regard to the small grain overseed. 3. Consult with a technical specialist to determine if the CAWMP is correct in regard to the allowable plant available nitrogen (PAN) rates and that adequate acreage is available for waste application.
