LAND GRADING (6002)
CONST RUCT /ON SPECIFICAT IONS
Subgrode Preparation - Prepore the subgrade for riprop ond filter to the required
lines and grades shoWn on the plans. Compact any fill required in the subgrade
to o density opproximoting thot of the surrounding undisturbed moteriol or overf7/l
depressions With riprop. Remove brush, trees, stumps ond other ob /'ectionol
material. Cut the subgrode sufflciently deep that the finlshed grode of the riprop
Will be at the elevotion of the surrounding area. Channels should be excavated
sufficiently to alloW placement of the iprap in o manner such that the finished
inslde dlmens7ons and grode of the riprop meet deslgn specificotions.
Sand and grovel filter blanket - Ploce the filter blanket immediately after the ground
foundotion is prepared. For gravel, spread filter stone in o uniform layer to the
specified depth. Where more than one loyer of filter material is used, spread the
loyers With minimal mixing.
Synthetic filter fabric - Ploce the cloth filter directly on the prepared foundotion.
Overlap tl edges by at least l2 inches, and space anchor pins every 3 ft along
the overlap. Bury the upstream end of the cloth a minimum of l2 inches beloW
ground and Wlre necessory, bury the loWer end of the cloth or overlop With the
next section as required. Toke care not to damage the cloth When placing riprop.
lf domage occurs remove the riprap ond repair tl sheet by adding another layer
of filter moteriol With o minimum overlop of l2 inches oround the domoged oreo.
lf extensive domage is suspected. remove and replace the entire sheet.
Where large stones are used or machine placement Is dlfficult, 0 4-inch layer of
flne gravel or sand may be needed to protect the filter cloth.
Stone Plocement - Plocement of riprap should folloW immediately ofter plocement
of the filter. Ploce riprop so thot if forms o dense,Well- roded moss of stone With
o minimum of voids. The desired disbribution of stones hroughout the moss moy
be obtained by selective loading ot the quorry and controlled dumping during
finol placement. Ploce riprap to its full thickness In one operation. Do not ploce
riprop by dumping through chutes or other methods that cause segregotion of
stone slzes. Take care not to dislodge the underlying base or f1/ter When placing
the stones.
The finished slope should be free of pockets of small stone or clusters of lorge
stones. Hand placing moy be necessory to ochieve the proper distribution of
stone slzes to produce a relatively smooth, unlform surfoce. The flnlshed grode
of the rlprap shou/d b/end With the surrounding area. /Vo overfa// or protruslon of
ri prop should be apporent.
MAINTENANCE

immediotely. intain oll vegetotion od jocent to the chonnel in a heolthy,
vigorous condltion to protect the areo from erosion ond scour during out-of-bank
floW. Control of Weed ond brush groWth moy be needed in some locotions.
l. Construct and maintain oll erosion and sedimentatlon contro/ practices and
measures in accordonce Wlth the approved sedlmentatlon contro/ plan and
construction schedu/e.
2. Remove good topsoil, os determined by o Geotechnlco/ Engineer from oreos

5. Ensure that fil/ moterial is free of brush, rubbish, rocks, logs, stumps,
building debris, and other materla/s Inapproprlate for constructing stable fills.
6. P/ace all f1/l in layers not to exceed 9 Inches In thickness, and compact
the loyers as required to reduce erosion, slippoge, settlement, or otlr
re/ated problems.
7. Do not Incorporate frozen moterlol or soft or high/y compressible
materi a/s i nto f i l/ s/opes.
8. Do not place f1/l on a frozen foundatlon, due to possible subsidence and
sllppage.
9. Keep diversions and other Water conveyance measures free of sediment
during oll phoses of deve/opment.
l0. Handle seeps or springs encountered during construction in occordonce
With opproved metlds.
ll. Permanent/y sta61/Ize all graded areas Immedlately after flna/ grading Is
comp/eted on each area in the grading p/an. App/y temporary stabi/Izatlon
