Low levels of styrene occur naturally in plants as well as a variety of foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, beverages, and meats, The production of styrene in the United States increased dramatically during the 1940s, when it was popularized as a feedstock for synthetic rubber. The presence of the vinyl group allows styrene to polymerize. Commercially significant products include polystyrene, ABS, styrene-butadiene (SBR) rubber, styrene-butadiene latex, SIS (styrene - isoprene -styrene), S-EB-S (styrene-ethylenelbutylene-styrene), styrene-divinylbenzene (S-DVB), and unsaturated polyesters. These materials are used in rubber, plastic, insulation, fiberglass, pipes, automobile and boat parts, food containers, and carpet backing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Styrene 7/29/2010 Styrene - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Page 3 of 5 Production Styrene is produced in industrial quantities from ethylbenzene, which is in turn prepared on a large scale by alkylation of benzene with ethylene.111 Dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene Styrene is most commonly produced by the catalytic dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene. Ethylbenzene is mixed in the gas phase with 10-15 times its volume in high -temperature steam, and passed over a solid catalyst bed. Most ethylbenzene dehydrogenation catalysts are based on iron(III) oxide, promoted by several percent potassium oxide or potassium carbonate. A A -k c&d e/ NdN Steam serves several roles in this reaction. It is the source of heat for powering the endothermic reaction, and it removes coke that tends to form on the iron oxide catalyst through the water gas shift reaction. The potassium promoter enhances this decoking reaction, The steam also dilutes the reactant and products, shifting the position of chemical equilibrium towards products. A typical styrene plant consists of two or three reactors in series, which operate under vacuum to enhance the conversion and selectivity. Typical per -pass conversions are ca. 65% for two reactors and 70-75% for three reactors. Selectivity to styrene is 93-97%. The main byproducts are benzene and toluene: Because styrene and ethylbenzene have similar boiling points (145 and 136 °C, respectively), their separation requires tall distillation towers and high return/reflux ratios. At its distillation temperatures, styrene tends to polymerize. To minimize this problem, early styrene plants added elemental sulfur to inhibit the polymerization. During the 1970s, new free radical inhibitors consisting of nitrated phenol -based retarders were developed. More recently, a number of additives have been developed that exhibit superior inhibition against polymerization. However, the nitrated phenols are still widely used because of their relatively low cost. These reagents are added prior to the distillation. Improving conversion and so reducing the amount of ethylbenzene that must be separated is the chief impetus for researching alternative routes to styrene. Other than the POSM process, none of these routes like obtaining styrene from butadiene have been commercially demonstrated. Via ethylbenzenehydroperoxide Commercially styrene is also co -produced with propylene oxide in a process known as POSM (Lyondell Chemical Company) or SM/PO (Shell) for styrene monomer / propylene oxide. In this process ethylbenzene is treated with oxygen to farm the ethylbenzene hydroperoxide. This hydroperoxide is then used to oxidize propylene to propylene oxide. The resulting phenylethanol is dehydrated to give styrene: C6H5CH2CH3 + 02 C6H5CH2CH2O2H C6H5CH2CH2O2H + CH3CH=CH2 --> C6H5CH2CH2OH + CH3CHCH2O C6H5CH2CH2OH —+ C6H5CH=CH2 + H2O httD:Hen.wikinedia.ore/wiki/Styrene 7/29/2010 Styrene - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Page 4 of 5 Laboratory synthesis A laboratory synthesis of styrene entails the decarboxylation of cinnamic acid .t2] Styrene was first prepared by this method.l31 Other methods Styrene can be produced from toluene and methanol, which are cheaper raw materials than those in the conventional process. Historically, however, this process has suffered from low selectivity due to competing decomposition of methanol.l41 Exelus Inc. claims to have developed this process with commercially viable selectivities, at 400-425 °C and atmospheric pressure, by forcing these components through a proprietary zeolitic catalyst. It is reportedly] that an approximately 9:1 mixture of styrene and ethylbenzene is obtained, with a total styrene yield of over 60%.h1 Another developing route to styrene is via benzene and ethane. This process is being developed by Snamprogetti S.p.A. and Dow. Ethane, along with ethylbenzene, is fed to a dehydrogenation reactor with a catalyst capable of simultaneously producing styrene and ethylene. The dehydrogenation effluent is cooled and separated and the ethylene stream is recycled to the alkylation unit. The process attempts to overcome previous shortcomings in earlier attempts to develop production of styrene from ethane and benzene, such as inefficient recovery of aromatics, production of high levels of heavies and tars, and inefficient separation of hydrogen and ethane. Development of the process is ongoing.hl Health effects Styrene is only weakly toxic, with an LD50 of 500-5000 mg/kg (rats).l11l8l. The US EPA has described styrene as "a suspected carcinogen" and "a suspected toxin to the gastrointestinal, kidney, and respiratory systems, among others. "1911101 The U.S. EPA does not have a cancer classification for styrcnc, lll] but currently is evaluating styrene's cancer -causing potential through its Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) program.111. The National Toxicology Program of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also currently is evaluating styrene's potential toxicity 1131. To date, no regulatory body anywhere in the world has classified styrene as a known human carcinogen, although several refer to it in various contexts as a possible or potential human carcinogen. The International Agency for Research on Cancer considers styrene to be "possibly carcinogenic to humans.".t141 Chronic exposure to styrene leads to tiredness/lethargy, memory deficits, headaches and vertigo. [citation needed] Polystyrene plastic, according to the Styrene Information and Research Center, neither contains, nor breaks down into bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical used in plastic compounds that leads to developmental and reproductive problems in both adults and children.I151 References 1 ^"e `Denis H. Also known as vinyl benzene, styrene is a colorless liquid that quickly evaporates when exposed to the air. Although it is an aromatic monomer with a slightly sweet smell, its odor can be unpleasant in high concentrations or when mixed with other chemicals. If its molecules become linked to form long chains of styrene, it becomes polystyrene, an aromatic polymer with thermoplastic properties. In fact, it received its name in honor of the Styrax genus of trees that produce a sap from which benzoin resin is obtained. Its alternate name of vinyl benzene likely stems from the fact that it Is synthesized from ethylbenzene, which is the product of benzene and ethylene being subjected to catalytic dehydrogenation. Styrene molecules also contain a vinyl group (ethenyl) that share electrons in a reaction known as covalent bonding. This process is what allows the synthetic chemical to be made into plastics, such as polystyrene, synthetic rubber, and latex. During World War II, styrene production was at its peak in the U.S. due to a need for synthetic rubber, as the majority of natural rubber producing areas were held by the Japanese at the time. A substitute was secretly made by producing a copolymer of butadiene and styrene known as Government Rubber Styrene (GRS). By the mid-1940s, GRS production exceeded twice the level of What is Styrene? Page 2 of 2 Add Page to Favorltes natural rubber production prior to the onset of the war. During the war, this material was primarily used to make tires for the military. However, this invention stayed the course since GRS is still used suggest TOp1C In the manufacturing of all types of tires in the U.S. today. In other industries, styrene is used to make all sorts of products ranging from shoes to rubber backing for carpets. However, this material is also used to manufacture parts for cars and boats, plumbing pipes, fiberglass, insulation, some building materials, and electrical components. It is also used to make plastic drinking cups and food storage containers. Styrene has little, if any, environmental impact since it quickly degrades in the open air and evaporates from soil and water. However, certain health hazards of styrene have been noted. For one thing, the International Agency for Research on Cancer considers styrene to be a suspected carcinogen. Other than direct handling, exposure to this substance may occur from inhaling automobile exhaust, cigarette smoke, and being around building materials that contain styrene. In addition, styrene may be released when using a photocopy machine or leached when eating foods packed in a polystyrene container. Polyesters resins are used in sheet moulding compound, bulk moulding compound and the toner of laser printers. Wall panels fabricated from polyester resins reinforced with fiberglass — so- called fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) — are typically used in restaurants, kitchens, restrooms and other areas that require washable low -maintenance walls. Unsaturated polyesters are condensation polymers formed by the reaction ofpolyols (also known as polyhydric alcohols), organic compounds with multiple alcohol or hydroxy functional groups, with saturated or unsaturated dibasic acids. Typical polyols used are glycols such as ethylene glycol; acids used are phthalic acid and malefic acid. Water, a by-product of esterification reactions, is continuously removed, driving the reaction to completion. The use of unsaturated polyesters and additives such as styrene lowers the viscosity of the resin. The initially liquid resin is converted to a solid by cross -linking chains. This is done by creating free radicals at unsaturated bonds, which propagate in a chain reaction to other unsaturated bonds in adjacent molecules, linking them in the process. The initial free radicals are induced by adding a compound that easily decomposes into free radicals. This compound is usually and incorrectly known as the catalyst. Substances used are generally organic peroxides such as benzoyl peroxide. Polyester resins are thermosetting and, as with other resins, cure exothermically. The use of excessive catalyst can, therefore, cause charring or even ignition during the curing process. Excessive catalyst may also cause the product to fracture or form a rubbery material. Environmental precautions Prevent run-off to sewers, streams or other bodies of water. If run-off occurs, notify proper authorities as required, that a spill has occurred. Methods for cleaning up Absorb liquid on vermiculite, floor absorbent or other absorbent material. 7. HANDLING AND STORAGE Handling Containers of this material may be hazardous when emptied. Since emptied containers retain product residues (vapor, liquid, and/or solid), all hazard precautions given in the data sheet must be observed. Avoid prolonged or frequently repeated skin contact with this material. Skin contact can be minimized by wearing impervious protective gloves. As with all products of this nature, good personal hygiene is essential. Hands and other exposed areas should be washed thoroughly with soap and water after contact, especially before eating and/or smoking. Regular laundering of contaminated clothing is essential to reduce indirect skin contact with this material. Static ignition hazard can result from handling and use. Electrically bond and ground all containers, personnel and equipment before transfer or use of material. Special precautions may be necessary to dissipate static electricity for non-conductive containers. Personal protective equipment should be selected for individual applications and should consider factors which affect exposure potential, such as handling practices, chemical concentrations and ventilation. It is ultimately the responsibility of the employer to follow regulatory guidelines established by local authorities. Exposure controls Provide sufficient mechanical (general and/or local exhaust) ventilation to maintain exposure below TLV(s). OSHA has formally endorsed a styrene industry proposal for a voluntary 50 ppm workplace limit on styrene. Members of the Styrene Information and Research Council (SIRC), Composites Institute (CI), Composite Fabricators Association (CFA), International Cast Polymers Association (ICPA) and National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) have agreed to use either engineering controls, work practices or respiratory protection to achieve this voluntary limit for styrene. Eye protection Chemical splash goggles in compliance with OSHA regulations are advised, however, OSHA regulations also permit other type safety glasses. Consult your safety representative. Skin and body protection Wear resistant gloves (consult your safety equipment supplier). To prevent repeated or prolonged skin contact, wear impervious clothing and boots. Respiratory protection If workplace exposure limit(s) of product or any component is exceeded (see exposure guidelines), a NIOSH-approved air supplied respirator is advised in absence of proper environmental control. OSHA regulations also permit other NIOSH respirators Page 6 / 10 ASHLAND SAFETY DATA SHEET AROPOLM LB 1157-39 RESIN 119077 1 Page: 7 Revision Date: 01/25/2008 Print Date: 6/23/2009 MSDS Number: R0310934 Version: 1.5 (negative pressure type) under specified conditions (see your industrial hygienist).
