We are pleased to submit the NC State University Wastewater Collection System
Performance Report for calendar year 2018. For the fifth year in a row, NC State has
had no reportable sanitary overflow events. As required by NC General Statutes
Chapter 143-215.1C (a), the attached report has also been distributed to wastewater
collection system users on campus.

2018 PERFORMANCE REPORT
For Distribution to NC State University Wastewater Collection System Users
Annual Performance
During the calendar year 2018, the NC State University wastewater collection system had no
reportable sanitary sewer overflows, and was operated and maintained in accordance with Permit No.
WQCS00371 and State and Federal laws with no known violations.
Background
Wastewater collection systems are governed by North Carolina General Statute 143-215.1 C and North
Carolina Administrative Code Title 15A Chapters 2 and 8. Permit No. WQCS00371, issued by the NC
Division of Water Quality, allows NC State University to operate and maintain more than 20 miles of
sewer lines and associated piping, valves, and appurtenances required to make a complete and
operational wastewater collection system to serve the campus in an environmentally sound manner.
The sewage and wastewater collected by this system are discharged into the City of Raleigh's
wastewater collection system and treated at its Neuse River Facility.
A key to preventing sanitary sewer overflows is keeping fats, oils and grease (FOG) out of the
wastewater collection system. NC State encourages allowing FOG to cool and then be placed in a
suitable container for recycle or disposed in the trash to keep FOG out of drains. Waste Reduction
and Recycling in partnership with University Housing provide plastic "Cease the Grease' containers
for FOG collection.
Sanitary sewer overflows that release more than 1,000 gallons to the ground or any amount to surface
water (including through ditches and storm drains) must be reported to the state. NC State maintains
a 24 hour Facilities Operations number [phone] to receive reports of sanitary sewer overflows
and dispatch emergency personnel to minimize the environmental impact.
Recognition
The Utilities Distribution Shop (UD) within the Facilities Division is responsible for keeping the
wastewater collection system operating and for responding to overflows. Tom Nash, the UD
Supervisor, and three shop employees - John Lassiter, Brent Clayton and David Horne - are certified
Wastewater Operators who do an excellent job in maintaining the system. Thanks to their effects to
proactively identify and correct problems and their preparedness to respond to overflows, NC State
has not had a reportable sanitary sewer overflow event in the past 5 years.
Special thanks also go out to Sara Smith in Campus Enterprises. Sara's innovative work, dedication
and inspiration within University Dining have led to significant reductions in the amounts of fats, oil,
and grease entering the wastewater collection system.
