Thanks- our staff have worked hard to quickly identify and summarize health information relevant to this topic.
There might be some minor changes to the summary based on input from others here, but our goal is to have
something ready to share by Monday. Please let me know if you think it will be needed sooner. Also, please feel
free to share information for contacts in New Hanover and Brunswick who might be interested.

First, thank you and your staff for your work on better understanding the impacts of this
chemical. I think it would be helpful if you all could provide your assessment to the General
Assembly members and to the public utility directors whose water supply is being affected by
the chemical. I can provide you with our contacts in both New Hanover and Brunswick
County. Thanks again for your help and expertise.

I'm copying others here. The summary you received is based on a preliminary review by our
staff. As you know, there is limited human health information for this particular chemical. We
are continuing to look into this and we should be able to provide something to the General
Assembly members early next week if requested.

Thank you, I will share within DEQ.
We met with Sen. Lee and Rep. Grange from the Wilmington districts a few minutes
-°_
They are interested in the health information from DHHS. Given they are marked draft,
| am not sharing your document with them sothat you can work with them directly.
They are responding to media inquires as well and your information would be of great
benefit to them.
Here is what I just provided them from our thoughts:
We certainly understand the public concerns surrounding the issue with GenX and are
working with the EPA and others to learn more about the chemical compound and any
potential impacts itmay have.
It's important for the public to know that drinking water from the Cape Fear Public
Utility Authority meets all state and federal drinking water standards.
EPA has established standards for many pollutants impacting water quality and public
health. North Carolina and other states are in communication with EPA aufurther
guidance and research isdeveloped that
will provide the state Department of Environmental Quality with the information
needed tobegin developing regulatory limits for GenX.
The EPA is the sole agency responsible for establishing drinking water standards
nationwide and has extensive resources necessary to determine the nature, extent and
potential impacts ofchemicals such asGenX.
When EPA establishes guidance for emerging contaminants such as GenX, this triggers
the process used by EPA and states like North Carolina to develop regulations for these
contaminants.
People should be assured that there are steps that DEQ staff are taking while we're
awaiting guidance from the EPA. DEQ officials are talking with Chemours to assess waste
streams containing GenXand determine
if the company can reduce the amount of the chemical compound being discharged to
the river.
DHHS has drafted a summary of their review and I have asked them to share that with
you directly sothat you can follow upwith them asneeded.
Thank you for your time this afternoon.
