Emissions from Foreshot Receiver of Distillation Column
Modeling 100% C5F11 COF (MW = 316)
Control Device: Jacketed Vertical Condenser on brine jacketed tank removed and tank jacketed to
eliminate potential pluggage problem. Brine approach 5❑C
Volume of Tank 250 gallon maximum size
Number of Flanges: Bottom valve, up to five 2-inch nozzles.
Leakage rate for combined flange and valve -worst case = 0.0006 lb/hr.
Adjusting for molecular weight of air versus fluorochemical for this basis (9/22/95 HFPO expansion
Project Permit), we will calculate an inlet leak rate of air.
(5 flanges/valve) D. 0.0006 pounds/hr ❑ (28.8/166) ❑ 90 days/year ❑ 24 hours/day
= 1.1 pounds of air leakage into column
(1.1 pounds/year/28.8 Ib/ft3) = 0.039 moles/90 days of air leakage into column

Vapor pressure of C5F11 COF at 5❑C for an approach temperature for 011C brine, assume 50 mm
Hg
Assuming vacuum of 100 mm Hg, partial pressure of 50 mm Hg
(50/100) ❑ 0.039 lb-moles/year ❑ (316 lb/lb-mole) = 6 pounds/90 days (without additional controls of
C5F11COF)
Equivalent HF quantity = (20 lb/lb-mole/316 lb/lb-mole) ❑ 6 pounds/year = 0.38 pounds/year
Scrubbing efficiency for these components have been measured to be greater than 98% so actual
emissions would be about 0.12 pounds per year of VOC and 0.076 pounds per year of hydrogen
fluoride.
Bringing Foreshot Receiver to 8 psig ten times throughout campaign for purposes of draining heels
to a receiver. Assume full vacuum reapplied.
50 gallons equivalent to 6.5 ft3
(10) X 6.5 ft3 X 316 lb X 22.7 psis
359 ft3/lb mole lb mole 14.7 psi/atm
Before controls:
X 50/760 mm/Hg = 5.8 pounds of C5F11COF
This is equivalent to 0.36 pounds of HF before controls
After controls (reduced by 98%) actual C51711 COF would be 0.12 pounds and 0.0072 pounds of HF.
