I'm working on a general story about emerging contaminants in drinking water, e.g. GenX, Cr6 and 1-4 dioxane. I have a few questions about what is within DEQ's authority to regulate these contaminants: 1) Gov. Cooper yesterday called on EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt to provide the state with regulatory guidance for GenX. Can DEQ establish its own rules -- even temporarily or on an emergency basis -- regardin,-.4 contaminant levels in drinking water? Or does this fall under the authority of the EIVIC? 2) If DEQ/EMC has this authority, what is the process and timeline? 0 18ows, o I I budget cuts impose on the agency's ability to do this work?
