Hi Bridget,
The population for Bladen Bluffs is the population for Smithfield Farm and the population for International
Paper Co includes both the employees and the population of Rieglewood Sanitary District which purchases
water from International Paper Co.
Have a great day!

Hi Bridget,
Thanks. Regarding the service populations, is the number for Bladen Bluff the number of employees at
Smithfield Foods and the number for International Paper the number of employees there?
I appreciate the help.

Hi Bridget,
Thanks for this information.
Can you tell me where the discharges are and what they are?
This map of industrial dischargers in the Cape Fear River basin will provide that information:
https:Hncdenr.maps.arcais.com/apps/webappviewer/index.htmI?id=f321 a18b6def4a6c85f931234e28deaf.
Note that this includes the entire basin —not just the main stem, which has only 19 industrial dischargers.
Can you also tell me how many water systems there are that pull from the Cape Fear River, what and where
they are, and how many people each of them serve?
Staff from our public water supply program are working to pull that information together, but it may be
tomorrow before I have it.
I appreciate the help.

Also, what are the regulations governing chemicals like Gen X that don't yet have a determination regarding

As a requirement of the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency gathers
data about select unregulated contaminants to determine their prevalence and levels at drinking water facilities in the
nation. When combined with relevant health effect studies, the data is used to help EPA determine if regulation is
necessary, and if so, at what levels. The webpage for the overall program and monitoring data can be found at:
hftps://www.epa.gov/dwucmr.
Can you tell me how many industries discharge into the Cape Fear River?
There are 19 major facilities located on the mainstem of the Cape Fear River that have a NPDES wastewater
discharge permit. Over half of those facilities are municipal wastewater treatment plants. All of these facilities are
required to perform monitoring and submit monthly discharge monitoring reports to DEQ. For industrial dischargers,
the types of chemicals they are required to monitor for depends on their industrial processes and applicable state and
federal regulations.

Can you give me (or point me to) an overview of the permitting process for industries that are going to be

Also, what are the regulations governing chemicals like Gen X that don't yet have a determination regarding

Can you tell me how many industries discharge into the Cape Fear River? And how many people get their

Thanks.

Hi Jamie,
So does the Bladen Bluffs Water Treatment Plant get water from a well or the river? Also, do you know if
Smithfield uses the water only for its operations or is some of it used for drinking fountains and similar
uses at the plant?
Thanks.
