Yes, I'll handle. FYI, this is the statement we're providing at this time: DEQ is working to understand the full extent of the impacts of GenX and other emerging contaminants, including whether there was the potential for Chemours to emit GenX and other compounds into the air. Good morning, Could you confirm the following highlighted information below htW:11-,NAv,w.favobsen,er.comhiews/2Ol7O9l8/stite-investig,iting-possibilihy-of-airbome-Rcnx The department and the state Department of Health and Human Services have been investigating GenX at the Chemours plant since June. That's when news broke that researchers had discovered GciLX in the Cape Fear River downstreani from the Cheniours facility, which is off N.C. 87 near the Cumberland County line. The Cumberland County Environmental Health section is researching old well permits and well logs for private wells in the county for any information that will be helpful for the state in its investigation. Rod Jenkins, the courity's interim health director, said in a statement released by county officials that some well permits were filed in the 1990s, with the latest in 2011. Research has linked GcnX to testicular, pancreatic and liver cancer in animals, but it is unknown whether those effects are the i humans. Little is known about GenX and other chemicals known as "emerging contaminants. same III I 1 1 GenX is used to make nonstick coatings on cookware and for other purposes. DEQ-CFW-00084776 A Chemours spokesman gave a two -sentence response to questions about the potential of GenX and other compounds being emitted into the air. 'The reply to email questions about the investigation included thanking a reporter for the inquiry. "'We continue to work closely with local, state and federal officials to determine the appropriate next steps," the statement said. The company has issued similar statements in response to other questions about the issue. Chemours agreed to stop discharging GenX into the Cape Fear River after the state started its investigation into the chemical. The amount of the compound in the river has dropped. State officials also have found GenX in water from wells on the Chemours property, according to prelimmaly results from the tests. The state and the company are testing the drinking wells of residents who live near the plant. Chemours has offered to provide bottled water for residents who live within a mile of its facility. The tests on water from the plant's wells, which are not used for drinking, also found C.8. DuPont, which formed Cheniours as a i spinoff company 2013, agreed 2007 to stom p aking Cw 8 by 2015 as it as facing lawsuits for exposing residents who live near its plant in West Virginia and Ohio to the chemical. DuPont and Chemours agreed in February to each pay $335.35 million to settle the suits. They also said then that they would pay up to $25 million a year each for the next five years for possible later claims. DuPont tweaked the chemical makeup of C8 to form GenX,,,vlilch Chemours continued using.
