Subject: RE: State issues notice of violation against Chemours based on new groundwater tests
Our ongoing investigation and the protection of peoples' drinking water is our highest priority. As such, we are moving
quickly to start sampling peoples' wells because it is always a concern when we identify contamination in groundwater
near private drinking wells.
The results we receive will inform our next steps and we will keep the public informed at every step along the way.

Hi Jamie,
Thanks for the quickreply. Two other quickquestions. How does the presence ofC0(9F/)A)bring additional
urgency to the investigation? Should it bring greater concern to nearby residents?
I appreciate it.

Subject: Re: State issues notice of violation against Chemours based on new groundwater tests
H Jamie,
I was taking a look at the map showing the preliminary test results from the groundwater at Chemours. It looks like the
GenX level is hundreds of times the state drinking water goal and the PFOA (C8) level in a couple of places is 50 times
the federal health advisory level.
DEQ-CFW-00084411
Are those levels that should concern residents nearby?
People in this community deserve to knov about the safety of'thcir well water and we'rc orking to get them answers.
As is our routine when we find violations of groundwater rules on a regulated entity`s property, we are conducting
private well testing for people living near the facility to determine if any contamination has moved beyond the Chemours
facility- into wells used for drinking. We will conduct the private well testing and take any appropriate steps to protect
peoples' drinkinc water, based on what the results show.
Also, has DEQ gotten any more results from tests at the Chemours plant"?
We: have not received new results from the. Chemours plant.
Has DEQ started taking water samples from nearby residences?
State officials plan to start collecting water samples for testing from residential wells adjacent to the facility on Friday as
part of an ongoing investigation into the chemical CenX, which is produced by Chemours.
Finally, I noticed a subpoena on the website from a federal grand jury asking DEQ for Chemours documents. What is
that about?
In late July, the t'.S. Attomey`s Office issued DEQ with a subpoena that requests for the agency's documents, including
permits, environmental compliance information, reports, emails, research, and notes related to the Chemours Company's
Fayetteville Works facility, CenX and the other fluorinated chemicals. We are providing those documents in a roiling
schedule to the U.S. Attornev`s Office. We issued a news release about the subpoena and posted the subpoena itself. You
can Find the news release with the subpoena. linked at: https://deq.nc. ov/deq- ate .hering-documents-federal-investigation-

Thanks.

RALEIGH —State officials initiated additional enforcement actions against Chemours Wednesday after preliminary state test
results detected GenX in violation of state groundwater standards in non -drinking water wells at the company's Fayetteville
Works facility.
Preliminary test results publicized today by the state Department of Environmental Quality show concentrations of GenX in
wells on [hemoun/ Fayetteville Worksproperty in violation ofstate groundwater standards. The wells tested are used for
environmental monitoring at the facility and are not a source of drinking water.
Based on the preliminary results, DEQ announced its plans to cite Chemours with a notice of violation. Toda/sannouncement
comes aday after the state initiated other legal action against the company.
DEQ and the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services on Wednesday also alerted health officials in Bladen and
Cumberland counties to the preliminary test results. The state will perform initial testing for people who live near Chemours
while requiring the company to produce a comprehensive testing and compliance plan.

As part of the ongoing state investigation, DEQ collected groundwater samples from 14 groundwater monitoring wells on the
Chemours property in early August. Concentrations of GenX that exceeded acceptable limits were detected in 13 of 14
industrial wells at the plant. Preliminary test results have identified other detections of flourinated compounds.
The water samples collected by DEQ in early August at the company's industrial wells were sent to three laboratories. The
preliminary results come from only one of the labs — Gel Laboratories in Charleston, S.C. State officials have not received test
results from [hemounthat were sent to Test America's Colorado lab for analysis, and are awaiting final results from the EPA
