HomeMy WebLinkAboutDEQ-CFW_00083661The state's Department of Environmental Quality and Health and Humar Services have been actively investigating the situation at Chemours' This measure stems from DEQ`s receipt and validation earlier this week sample results from 14 groundwater monitoring wells at the Chemours' Fayetteville Works facility. I DEQ staff took the samples the first week in August and sent them to Gel Laboratories in Charleston to be analyzed. After reviewing the data, 13 of the 14 wells exceeded the 140 parts per trillion health goal established last summer by the state Department of Health and Human Services. The results also showed levels of PFAS compounds above what is allowed by its permit in several onsite monitoring wells, and detectable levels of PFOA or PFOS above the EPA's drinking water health advisory level in four wells. Along with samples collected by the state, the Environmental Protection Agency took samples from the same 14 wells and sent the samples to the EP laboratory in RTP. I OEQ-CFVV_00083661 It"s important to understand that these wells are not sources of drinking water but rather used for environmental monitoring at the facility. Further sampling is needed to determine the effect on the surrounding communities and the path of the plume. Typically, when a facility has exceeded the groundwater standards, that facility submits its results to the state"s Division of Waste Management whose staff validates it. Then, the facility provides a sampling plan that shows how it will I want to reiterate that Chemours has yet to provide its sampling results to the state, nor has it provided a sampling plan for additional private well sampling in the community. Both departments decided, based on the Gel Laboratories data results, to immediately initiate a private well sampling plan in communities adjacent to the facility. Both DEQ and DHHS have been in contact with the Cumberland and Blade County Health Departments. I II iiqas W-114 State and local health department staff will be on hand to answer any health - related questions regarding the private well sampling plan. These private wells will be sampled for GenX and other chemical compounds identified in a 2016 report by the EPA and N.C.
