First, according to Dr. Knappe the chemical of concern is C6HF1103, CAS# 13252-13-6. However, this can and should be verified by contacting the Lab doing the testing (Testing America?). The Lab can give the CAS# of the chemical they are testing for soxve are all in agreement astowhat is being tested. Dr. Knappe refers tothis chemical a Perf|uoro'2' prupuxypropanoic add, some refer to it as FRD 903 "GenX", and other states have called itC-3. [hemouru refers to it as HFPO climer acid on occasion. If nothing else, DWR needs to be clear on what chemical is being analyzed at the lab. Second, I believe that it was Chemours that stated DuPont had been releasing this chemical into the Cape Fear River since the 1980s as a byproduct. Perhaps someone who attended the CFPUA meeting can confirm that statement from Chemours. This date or statement cannot be concluded by looking at permit files that only go back to 1992. Third, Connie and I just learned on June 301h that the HFPO climer that Michael Johnson refers to is the same thing as FRD9O3^GenX". We have heard Michael refer to it as GenX at some points during the last couple of weeks but we were unclear asto which GenX compound it was. Note, NPDE5 permit applications have stated that wastewater from the HFPO monomer and the Vinyl Ethers Process are discharged to the VVVVTP but it was not stated that a byproduct in the discharge was GenX. Again, this could be because it goes by so many different names or Chemours choose to describe it differently —| don't know. Fourth, I am still unclear on whether the FRD 903 GenX is used as an ingredient in the PPVE process or is a byproduct or both. [hemours needs to explain the process and chemistry to us more clearly. The reporters are asking good questions but we need time to research this as well.
