HomeMy WebLinkAboutDEQ-CFW_00083156The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality is requesting that Chemours
stop releasing from their Fayetteville facility two unregulated chemical
compounds identified in a new EPA report that looked at perflourinated
compounds in the Cape Fear River other than GenX.
• DEQ's number one priority is to protect the state's citizens and, until we
know more about the health impacts from Naflon I and 2, we are asking the
company to cease its discharge.
State environmental officials today released DgenX results for weeks six and
seven, as well as five other unregulated chemical compounds studied by the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The other three chemical compounds are known as PFMOAA, PF02HxA
and PF030A. These three have trended downward, like GenX. Naflon I and
2 have remain elevated.
Nafion I and 2 were not part of the original Sung et al study referenced by
Dr. Detlef Knappe and only came to light in EPA's August 21 report. They
were not included in the wastewater permit because they are unregulated.
• The federal environmental agency used a new methodology, known as mass
spectrometry, and determined that five other chemical compounds showed
peaks.
While the EPA does not know the exact concentration because no standards
exist for the compounds, they have confidence in the chemical identity.
There is not enoiw-b-lie-alth-tw1w to-teten-nine w, hewlth ao.?l like there was for
EPA expects there to be more chemicals identified as they continue their
study. With this new methodology and technology, new compounds are
being found that are unregulated.
DEQ-CFW-00083156
There are, potentially, tens of thousands of unregulated chemicals in the
environment and possibly in drinking water across the country. It takes EP
decades, in some cases, to study the health effects of a compound and
determine if the risk to the public is great enough to create a drinking wate
standard. I
The state's environmental department will continue to sample for GenX as
their investigation continues. Are we sampling for the others9
