Summary of investigation: On Thursday, 10/24/13, Mike Reid of RCO received an email report from the NRC of a 10 gallon release of dichloromethane (methylene chloride) from a tank cooler. The leak was reportedly the result of a tube fitting that was split. DEQ-CFW 00067935 DuPont Company — Fayetteville Works Methylene Chloride Release 10/24/2013 Page 2 of 2 On Thursday 10/24/13, Greg Reeves received a phone message from Mike Johnson of DuPont, informing DAQ of a small release of dichloromethane (methylene chloride) from a leaking heat tracing tubing. The leaking fluid was contained and captured by placing buckets under the leaking tubing. Mr. Johnson stated that the release to the atmosphere was extremely small, approaching de minimus amounts. The methylene chloride storage tank levels prior to and after the leak were compared to determine the amount of the leak, but showed no apparent differences. Approximately 44 lbs of liquid was captured in the buckets placed below the leaking tubing. It would appear that the vast majority of the leaking fluid was captured in drums, and the emissions to the atmosphere were negligible.
