We were contacted by our commercial laboratory regarding a problem they experienced while performing the
12/18/00 TSS analysis of Outfall 001 SIMALABS International reported that they had misplaced their bench sheets
with the original raw data for this particular analysis They reanalyzed the sample even though it was out of hold
time SIMALABS contacted DWO about the situation, and were advised to report both the original result and the
retest to DuPont, and for DuPont to report the original result (43 mg/L) on this DMR. See attached letter from

Your analytical report for samples taken 12/19/2000 includes a comment and qualifier for the Total
Suspended Solids result. The sample was analyzed 12/21/2000 and the information was entered into our
Laboratory Information Management System. During the quality review process we discovered the raw
data for these analyses has been misplaced. SIMALABS International (Formerly Burlington Research) is
aware of the importance of having legally defensible data and took the following steps prior to reporting
this data.
1. Conducted a thorough search of files and the laboratory for the worksheet.
2. Contacted the Division of Water Quality Laboratory Certification Section.
3. Contacted the Division of Water Quality Point Source Branch Compliance and Enforcement Unit.
4. Reanalyzed the samples out of hold time.
5. Reported both results to you.
The Division of Water Quality has advised us to report both results to you with an explanation of what
occurred. While we are confident the analyses were performed correctly, we must have the original
documented data for proof. We are still looking for the bench sheet with hopes that it will be located. If
the bench sheet is found we will reissue the report without the qualifier. The result in the main body of
our standard report is the original result analyzed within hold time. The result reported as a comment at
the bottom of the report has been run out of hold time.
DMR Reporting
Report the original result as you would normally. The result shown as a comment on our report should be
written on the back of your DMR, indicating the date of collection. Include a copy of this letter and our
analytical report with the DMR.
