Department of Environmental Quality onWednesday confirmed additional sources of the unregulated chemical GenX at the Chemours industrial complex have been collected toprevent the unregulated compound from discharging to the Cape Fear River. The state deployed aninspection team totheFayetteville Works facility inresponse &xoreport from Chun/ourothat recent water testing conducted by the company showed the presence ofGenX at the p|ant'opoint of discharge to the Cape Fear The Chemours facility ouJune 2l changed its process toreroute wastewatercontaining GeoXtotankers for removal and offsite incineration. DEQinspectors were deployed this week after [homouroindicated that data the company had collected was higher than what hwould have expected after the June 2|wastewater diversion had begun. The company reported toDEQthat hhad found other areas where GonX was being released into the wastewater. DG0confirmed during the inspection that the company halted the affected industrial activities uithe plant and stopped the additional wastewater discharge. Stateinspectors confirmed Wednesday that the additional GenX material had been contained and was not being discharged. The additional discharge was coming from several areas at the plant. Company officials have told the state that the process areas where the {}cnX originated will remain inactivuntil the wastewater from the areas is collected for removal and offsite incineration.
