Subject: FW: WECT inquiry/GenX -- Brandon's questions and responses
Here are the responses to Brandon's questions. Are you ok with them? Don't know about the last question.
In reference to The Chemours Company — Fayetteville Works permit renewal application (NCO003573) — I'm wondering if
you can direct me to the area of the permit that lists GenX and the other PFECAs as pollutants? Have these substances
been listed on Chemours' permits prior to this renewal application? Are Chemours' permits part of DEQ:s GenX
investigation?
Section XI in EPA Form 2 describes the processes that generate wastewaters discharged through the Wastewater
treatment plant. It includes fluorinated monomers and vinyl ether monomers. In addition, the supplemental information
attached to the application describes the facility's operating conditions. The previous application also describes the
operations and processes than generate wastewater.
Onthe company's most recent application (whichexpined|ast year)[hemounwas authorized todischarge P0Afrom
Outfall 002, and was required to take samples monthly. There might be a simple answer to this, but my understanding is
DuPont, which formed Chemours, agreed to phase out PFOA in 2005, so wondering why they are still permitted to
discharge it?
The current permit requires monitoring for PFOA at outfall 002 and upstream in the Cape Fear River. The requirement to
monitor was carried over from the previous permit issued in 2007. The Division of Water Resources implemented
monitoring for PFOA in the 2007 permit to gather data on the pollutant in the effluent and instream.
Also, do you have an expected date of when testing of the sampling done in the Cape Fear River will be available?
We are hoping to have the sampling analysis completed in the coming weeks. We will make the results available as soon
as possible.
