I
I moved to Wilmington 5 years ago and like most people that relocate here, fell In love
with Wilmington's natural beauty and southern charm. As a Wilmington homeowner,
parent of two small children and business owner I wanted to provide some information
about the recent discovery of GenX in our water supply - in the event you are unaware
and presently consuming public water.
When the store was first reported by Star News I was shocked and concerned about the
health of € y family, friends (some of whom have been drinking tap water their whole lives)
and partiCUlarly hose most at risk - children and the elderly
Per the Press Conference, the GenX Forum at UNCW, the CBS News stoCy, and stories
posted in the Facebook Group -I've learned:
• Dupont,Chemours has been dumping CS and Gen-X in the Cape Fear River since
1980, among a host of other unknown contaminants
• The Cape Fear River is the Cape Fear Public Utility /Wthority's (CFPU ) source of
drinking water and is provided to over 100,000 in New Hanover County
• Gen-X is a chemical produced by Che €curs (a former subsidiary of Dupont) and
is the replacement chemical of C . CO is now a known toxin and banned by most
countries globally as it causes a variety of harmful effects to humans... read more
• Due to the rass root efforts of our co€ ,innunit , Che€ noursarll = aG reed tc
cease durnoina Gen-X into.the Cape Fear River,
• Per Chemours lab results, submitted to the EPA, show that Gen-X Is harmful to
lab rats, but its toxicity and effects to humans is unknown
• Currently, we do not know how concentrated Gen-X, CS or other compoUnds are
In our drinking water
• Water testing is underway and most experts advise to not drink the water until
€yore information is available
• Due to the low biodegradation of these chemicals it is unclear of how our water
supply can be remediated.
• Whole house water filtration (reverse osmosis, carbon filtration) may eliminate
these chemicals, but rest.€Its are presently unknown
s a member of the Cape Fear Association of Realtors; we have been advised that "there
is no disclosure issue until we know the effects of the chemical in the water supply. Once
we know what the effects are, it may be a material fact that must be disclosed,"
In my opinion, Our community needs to continue the momentum by urging OUr elected
officials to pass legislation (1) to Malt chemical dumping into any public water soy.€rce and
to () demand state assistance for clean drinking water for all imparted residents.
