Subject: Laboratory Results during week of August 2, 2004
Compliance Evaluation Inspection (CEI)
DuPont - Fayetteville Works
NPDES Permit No. NC0003573
Bladen County
Dear Mr. Johnson:
William G. Ross Jr., Secretary
Alan W. Klimek, P.E., Director
Coleen H. Sullins, Deputy Director
Division of Water Quality
Due to a recently discovered oversight on my part, I regret to say that this report is sent to you very
late. I apologize for the delay. We strive to get laboratory results out within 30 days of the inspection.
Two 24-hour composite samples were originally intended to be part of a routine Compliance
Biomonitoring Inspection (the BIO was a sampling inspection plus a CEI); the sampling part of the
inspection included sampling for the Whole Effluent Toxicity (WET) and selected chemistry parameters
that were taken downstream of the confluence of Outfall 001 and Outfall 002. The CEI part was
conducted on June 16, 2004, and the report was sent to you on August 4, 2004. It is acknowledged that
DWQ-Fayetteville Regional Office did not take the chemistries from the Outfall 002, as required by
DuPont's NPDES permit.
The following laboratory results were for the 24-hour composite sample that was collected
between 10:50 AM on August 2, 2004 through 10:50 AM on August 3, 2004:

On August 3 and August 6, 2004, whole effluent toxicity samples (WET) were collected by DWQ-
Fayetteville Regional Office for use in a chronic Ceriodaphnia dubia pass/fail toxicity test. The first
sample was collected as a 24-hour composite, while the second sample was collected as a grab due to a
sampler malfunction. The test using these samples was invalidated due to control organism performance
and may not be used for compliance monitoring purposes.
If you have any questions concerning this report, please feel free to contact me at (910) 486-1541
