Department of Health and Human Services, is leading a state investigation regarding
reports of an unregulated chemical known as GenX in the lower Cape Fear River.

can botaken mreduce oreliminate the discharges o[the chemical to the river until the state
completes its investigation.
Chemours responded (opressure from DBQ,local officials and citizens 6vannouncing that on
June 2i20|7the company would capture, remove and safely dispose o[wastewater that
contains the byproduct GenX generated at its manufacturing facility in Fayetteville.
This iaugood first step, but D20and the Department ofHealth and Human Services will
continue toinvestigate UdoioouoountJxohm/omnonor toaddress the concerns n[
downstream water users.
New data io an essential for documenting current conditions and takingappropriate uu(kxo.
This week, DB0began collecting water samples from |2sites along the Cape Four River.
Additional samples will bocollected throughout the region duninuthe next two weeks. After
meetingwith staff ioD20,Choouour agreed inbear all costs for sampling and analysis. The
analysis of water samples will be conducted by two independent laboratories, a certified
facility in Colorado and a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency laboratory in the Research
Triangle Park near Raleigh. The sample results will be released by the DEQ and DHHS.
DBQ also has been pushing theEnvironmental Protection Agency toprovide regulatory
guidance onGonXand work with the state during its investigation ofGon}{inUhcCuocFemr
Rivor. In response, the EPA has informed D20dwill work closely with the state and public
water systems iodetermine the appropriatenext steps (oensure public health protection.
