Zack:
Many thanks. Two pieces of feedback, one specific to the header and the other about the Q&A.
1. What are your thoughts about adding the following two points: "this is not regu|atorycommunication"
and/or "this is not an official statement from DHHSor DPH"?
J. Where will this message be located? At the top of the document or the end? My preference will be at the top
as it will be the first thing folks read.
3. Right now, the document indicates that this is a Q&A document prepared by DHHS/DPH. Will (or should) this
evolve/transition into ajoint DE[FDHH8document?
1. I'm assume the track -change edits will be removed in the final version.
J. Some quick reaction onthe proposed answers totwo ofthe last three questions (my edits are inBOLD AND ALL
The same publication that first reported identification of GenX in samples collected during 2013-2014 also
included results for several other chemicals in the same fluorinated family of compounds.' Low concentrations
of the "legacy" chemicals (PFOA and PFOS2) were found in the Cape Fear River. For some newer or "emerging"
chemicals, specific levels could not be measured due to limitations of current laboratory testing. Limited
information is available about the potential health effects of these newer chemicals. As with GenX, N.C. DHHS
is ASSISTING DEQ TO REVIEW all available health data in order to better understand and communicate
possible health risks.
(NOTE: I RE -ORDERED THE SENTENCES IN THIS RESPONSE) N.C. DHHS issues fish consumption advisories,
telling people to either limit consumption or, if necessary, avoid eating fish entirely WHICH CONTAIN HIGH
LEVELS OF CONTAMINANTS THAT MAY POSE A RISK TO HUMAN HEALTH. No specific fish advisories have
been issued related to GenX. A list of CURRENT statewide and location -specific fish advisories is available at

I'm attaching an updated O&,4document re0ardin8GenX. We added three new questions in response to specific
requests from local health departments and made one small change in response to an earlier suggestion.
We heard very clearly from local partners that they would like to receive these today if at all possible. I propose that we
send with the following message (modified from messages sent with CDC updates): "Note toour partners: The aUachec
document contains questions and answers relating to GenX. These are shared with our partners as a means of providing
awareness ofcurrently available information, and as helpful tool to maintain consistency in communicating. This

We are planning to send this to health directors in New Hanover, Brunswick, Penderand B|adenCounties at5:OOtoday.
Please let me know before then if you have any comments or suggestions. Thanks.
