Are you able to provide a quote for the two NC stories? Also do you know if Secretary Regan plans to attend? In 2007, EPA ORD began a first -ever effort in the U.S. to map PFAS levels in an entire watershed, focusing on North Carolina's [ape Fear River Basin. This mapping effort demonstrated that there were multiple sources of many different PFAS throughout the basin, suggesting that since the basin is a major drinking water resource, it could potentially be responsible for human exposures to PFAS throughout the entire region. As part of this effort, ORD also developed research based methods to measure PFAS in drinking water. EPA ORD's PFAS research in the Cape Fear Basin has continued since the 2007 mapping effort, specifically focusing on continued tracking of PFAS in surface and drinking water samples while discovering the emergence of novel PFAS using high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) non -targeted analysis approaches. This work was highlighting the ongoing presence not only of many of the old, legacy PFAS compounds (such as PFOS/PFOA), but also of a suite of new PFAS OEQ-CFVV_00054013 (such as Gen>A that came into production after the legacy PFA5w/ere phased out Most recently, 0RD researcher showed conclusively that these new PFASvvere present in the drinking water in Wilmington, N(, which will assist the state ufNorth Carolina in understanding exposures from PFAS. The forum focused onproviding recommendations, technical information, and potential solutions tothe wastewater industry, particularly in emergencies. EPA isinvestigating data needs inareas that, if filled, could assist wastewater plant operators inmaking decisions about whether and how toaccept wastewater contaminated with pathogens (e.8. anthrax bacteria, Ebo|avirus) during an emergency. EPA is also in the process of performing research projects toaddress needs associated with POTW acceptance of wastewater potentially contaminated with pathogens. The forum was organized around the following questions: How dow/edeal with waste water contaminated with biological agents such asBacillus onthnocborEbo|avirus? What is needed to address concerns and issues raised by the public, wastewater workers and operators? What are the data Baps and what type ofresearch is needed? As a result of this forum, EPA and the Water Environment Research Foundation held a national workshop on the topic in 2016. In turn, this led to several research projects being planned and implemented to address the key research gaps and needs brought upinthe workshop. OEQ-CFVV_00054014
