A followup question: Is there some reason that, in the meantime, given that it generally takes EPA years to set such guidelines and Chemours, that DEQ should not set a limit in Chemours' NPDES permit for GenX and, perhaps, some of the other perfluorinated compounds? The following is attributable to me, as spokesman: North Carolina officials need EPA to provide its guidance in order for North Carolina to be able to set surface and ground water standards for GenX, which is why Governor Cooper is pressing the EPA for swift action. Once the EPA takes action on GenX, North Carolina can develop an enforceable standard for it instead of having to rely on Chemours agreeing not to discharge. As DEQ-CFW-00053133 part of the state's ongoing investigation, DEQ is looking closely at Chemours' discharge permit and will not renew it while questions remain about the company's actions. I had a few questions regarding Governor Cooper's statement yesterday, but I wanted to make sure I understood what was meant by one particular part. In the press release accompanying the statement, it says: "Additional action from the EPA is necessary in order for North Carolina to be able to permanently require Chemours to limit or end discharge of GenX or any currently unregulated chemical." Is the governor saying this is necessary because North Carolina does not have the regulatory authority without guidance from EPA to limit or end discharge of GenX? If so, is that something specific to North Carolina? If not, can you help me understand the obstacle(s) to which the governor is referring?. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
