Subject: please call or send me current status of performance standards for DW filters for folks around coal ash sites
I'm very much hoping to hear back from you before the end of the day today so that I can share information
with the statewide Alliance of Carolinians Together Against Coal Ash, which is meeting tomorrow. Anumber
of communities, including one I'm working with (Roxboro) have been very concerned by Duke proposing only
filtration systems for well owners within Y2mile of compliance boundary, which they do not see as a
permanent and sustainable source of safe water. They have also been deeply troubled by the lack of
performance standards for removal of contaminants by those filtration systems. Several of us raised this to
the DEQ team from RRO who attended the Feb. 28th open house near Mayo. Rick Bolich, among others,
seemed to share our concerns.
Recently we learned from a western NC reporter that he had been told that performance standards developed
had been shared with Duke but not with the public. When I spoke with Jay Zimmerman yesterday, he
acknowledged this, but said the roll -out was coming soon. "Duke didn't get what they wanted, ie just the
federal MCL's, for performance standards, but I'm not sure everyone's going to be happy with these." He
encouraged me to talk with you, as you had been the recipient of input from DHHS and various folks at DEQ,
so I'm following up and hoping you can share a brief update with me this afternoon.
Many thanks for your attention to this request, and thanks also for your responsiveness during our meetings
with DEQ on the Atlantic Coast Pipeline as well as coal ash in recent weeks.
