PSA on Gen-X Hello, I moved to Wilmington 5 years ago and like €post people that relocate here, tell in love with Wilmington's natural beauty and southern charm. As a Wilmington homeowner, parent of two small children and business owner I wanted to provide some information about the recent discover} of GenX in our water supply - in the event you are unaware and [presently consuming ublic water. When the stony was first reported by Star News l was shocked and concerned about the health of my family, friends (some of whom have been drinking tap water their whole lives) and particularly those most at risk - children and the elderly DEQ-CFW 00052761 Per the Press Conference, the GenX Forum at UNCW, the CBS News story, and stories posted in the Facebook Group I've learned. • DupontiChernours has been dumping C6 and Gen-X in the Cape Fear River since 1980, among a host of other unknown contaminants • The Cape Fear River is the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority's (CFPUA) source of drinking water and is provided to over 100,000 in New Hanover Count • Gen-X is a chemical produced by Chemours (a former subsidiary of Dupont) and is the replacement chemical of C8. CS is now a known toxin and banned by most countries globally as it causes a variety of harmful effects to humans... read more • o__to_tfe.. €_ __pt__efforts..of_o_€__ € Ii,.. f€ It: _ I i... r _ cease dumping Gen-X into the Ca e Fear Ripe€. • Per Chemours lab results, Submitted to the EPA, show that Gen-X is harmful to lab rats; but its toxicity and effects to humans is unknown • Currently, we do not know how concentrated Gen-X, C6 or other compounds are in our drinking water • eater testing is under ray and most experts advise to not drink the water until more information is mailable • Due to the low biodegradation of these chemicals it is unclear of how our water supply can be remediated. • Whole house water filtration (reverse osmosis, carbon filtration) may eliminate these chemicals, but results are presently unknown As a member of the Cape Fear Association of Realtors; we have been advised that "there is no disclosure issue until we know the effects of the chemical in the water supply. Once we know what the effects are; it may be a material fact that must be disclosed," In my opinion, our community needs to continue the momenturn by urging our elected officials to pass legislation (1) to halt chernical dumping Into any public water source and to (2) demand state assistance for clean drinking water for all impacted residents.
