If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to let me know. DWM-Michael Scott We also heard from the N&O this week. Andy and I spoke to them previously and I followed -up with the reporter this Hi Michael: Thanks for your help with questions regarding landfill aerosolization. I had a couple of questions come to mind. There are four sites right now that have been approved for this spraying. When will these places start the process? The second question I have is the work DEQ and the General Assembly have been working on regarding this bill. If you are already looking at this from a case by case situation and permitting sites, then why did the bill need to be created and passed? DAQ—Jill Lucas Joe Dexter ofRockingham Now (alocal section ofGreensboro News 0/Record) inquired astowhy apublic hearing was notschedu|edbeforeapermhw/asgrantedtoNTE[aro|inas.8pecU5caUy,heaskedifthereisa"thresho|d"forthe number of comments received to make such a call, and how many comments were received for this specific issue. ° There is no threshold for the number of comments to determine whether a public hearing will be held as part of the permitting process. This isdetermined onacase'by-casebasis. 0 In the case of NTE, 14 comments were received. DAQ carefully and thoughtfully reviewed comments along with the permit application. The permit was granted because we are confident that the company can operate in compliance with all rules that apply. DAQ has encouraged the company to present a community information session, in which it would respond to questions. We feel this would be more effective for the community since a formal public hearing would serve to receive and record comments but not respond to them at the time. DAQ is open to participating if invited. ZachKopkin of Appalachian Voice (a bimonthly newspaper produced by the nonpartisan nonprofit Appalachian Voices) wrote to ask about DAO/s response to the federal government's decision towithdraw from the Paris Climate Accord. He referenced the Governor's support of We Are Still In, signifying that the state still will seek to achieve the Paris emissions standard. Specifically, he asked: * Has NC DEQ identified any specific steps to pursue in order to reduce the state's greenhouse gas emissions by 26 percent from 2005 levels the United States' Paris objective? | just sent him our response, approved byMike Abraczinskas The Division of Air Quality (DAQ) has not dialed back any programs or activities since the federal government's announcement towithdraw from the Paris agreement. SinceZUUS North Carolina has reduced CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion generated by the utilities sector by more than 25 percent. Between 2005 and 2014, total CO2 emissions statewide have decreased by 18 percent, placing usun a positive trajectory. DAQ continues to consider and evaluate other efforts that will further reduce the state's carbon footprint. North Carolina will have new opportunities to accomplish this through the Volkswagen Settlement, which is projected to provide$9J million to support efforts to remediate excess nitrous oxide emissions. DWI —Cathy Akroyd Cathy Akroydspoke with: * special projects reporter Lesa Layno of WGHP-TV/High Point- narrowing down the focus of her planned story about Piedmont Crescent Golf Course Lake and Forest Oak Lake Dam. The story is in the exploration stage right now, without a hard deadline. 0 Sarah spoke to Taft Wireback with the Greensboro News and Record about PFOS, a chemical that is in the same PFAS family as GenX, found in Greensboro's and Pinehurst's water supply. 0 Sarah spoke to Melinda Penkava with towndock.net about a proposed coastal project in Oriental. 0 Sarah spoke to Ben Schachtman with Port City Daily about the steps it would take to develop state surface and drinking water standards for GenX.
