Sampling instructions
1. Please indicate split tests on the sample collect! , fornis and remember to include the identity of the lab receiving the split. This is
critical in order for ATU to identify and a valuate the split samples. Also ensure that the sample collection form submitted to ATU and the
chain of custody submitted to the contract dab has rnatchlutg sample type (composite vs. grab, type of composite), sampling times, and
sample collector infxrtttatiorr. ATU uses ory "true" splits for mortified laboratory evaluations. True splits originate from a single grab or
composite sampr:rle acid' are split into 2 representathv aliquots for analysis by ATU and the other laboratory. Regional office staff should
make every effort to;perform the sample frr lit themselves or, at the very least, be present when the sample is split by facility staff unless
extenuating circt iMt=r Ces (i.e. late sanip1 e0 ectio t times, etc...) would make it impractical. It should be noted on the sample collection
form if the regional office staff is not present .the time oftlte sample split.
2. Samples should not be crr ollected before to AM and prefei~ably 11 AM. Thus is to allow adequate time for sample delivery to ATU and
preparation of samples for test initiation. If a sample collection time earlier than 10 AM is unavoidable please notify ATU staff as soon as
possible. The maximum holding tide for samples. (prior to initiation of the toxicity test) is 36 hours for acute test samples and 72 hours
for chronic test samples. The holding time..for composite samples begins at the time of completion of the 24-hr composite.
3. If a facility representative is preserrt at the sample collection, note the name of the facility representative and identify them as a facility
representative on the sample collection forn Tt is advised that the facility representative also sign the form.
4. If the sample is a timed composite, mark" the number of samples collected per hour. If the sample is a flow proportional composite,
indicate this on the sheet.
5. In the comments section, indicate whether the sample was collected using the regional office staff equipment or the facility collection
equipment.
6. All samples should be iced during collection and transport. Be sure to completely fill the coolers with ice and use large coolers whenever
possible. This is particularly crucial for the second sample collected for chronic tests during warm weather months, as they will remain in
the cooler until delivery to ATU on Monday morning. Also, please notify ATU staff if samples are being mailed in multiple coolers.
