Dear Ms. Sullins:
Secretary
As you are aware the NCSAB has been developing a recommendation for a PFOA MAC for DWQ.
This process has been ongoing for some time, in part due to the great interest of the general
public and public interest groups. The NCSAB has completed a draft risk assessment for PFOA,
had a public review of that draft and as a result of comments received decided to postpone its
final recommendation pending the publication of several papers that may be of significant
interest in this assessment. The NCSAB has been informed that these papers will be published
within the next month.
The NCSAB recommendation in the draft risk assessment was that DWQ establish a MAC at a
concentration of 1 pa rt-per-bil lion PFOA in groundwater. In the interim before the PFOA risk
assessment is finalized, the NCSAB recommends, by a unanimous vote, that DWQ take action to
reduce the PFOA IMAC from the current 2 pa rts-per-bi Ilion PFOA concentration in groundwater
to a level of 1 part -per -billion.
