Capabilities also include an Aerosol Test Facility. This facility in- cludes one of only a few large aerosol wind funnel research facilities in the nation and provides technologies that are otthe cuffing edge to increase understanding ofaerosol particle behavior inthe environment. Chemical safety has been omajor priori- ty forEPA since itwas established in l97O.Today, some 9O'OOOchemicals are listed or registered under the Toxic Sub- stances Control Act (TSCA), and hun- dreds of new chemicals are introduced every year. EPA scientists have developed faster, more efficient, and far less costly ways hotest and screen chemicals than traditional methods. How much time and money might EP/`'snew methods save? ORDRTP researchers with the Agency's ToxCostprogram needed just three years and about $3OKtoscreen approximately l.8OOchemicals for possible effects onthe endocrine system. Using traditional toxicity methods, only 6O-lUUchemicals can betested per year otocost ofapproximately $l million each. Air Sensor Citizen Science Research is conducted out ofthe RTPfacility where low-cost and portable sensors are de- veloped and evaluated for use by states and communities.
