subject: Release of PVB Resin to Cape Fear River
mark and Belinda:
Yesterday' 3anuary ZO' ZOIl' a release of 15O pounds of polyvinyl butyra]
(^pvo^) resin occurred at this site's eutaciteOManufacturing Process when the flake drying process' head
tank overflowed. This material was mistakenly washed into a storm drain on the roof of the outaritew
manufacturing building' which discharges directly to the site's wondlined ditch and ultimately to the
Cape pear River.
Attached is the msos for the pvo resin. You will see that the material is insoluble in water and is
considered to be non -toxic.
(see attached file: autacite pvo Resin msos.pdf)
The cause of this material being discharged directly to the river was due to the eutaciteO manufacturing
building's roof drain cover being incorrectly painted green, which would indicate that the drain leads to
the site's wastewater Treatment Plant. The drain cover should have been painted red, which would have
indicated to the autacitell personnel that the drain discharges to the wnodlined ditch non -contact cooling
water and ultimately to the river, and which would have prevented them from washing the pve resin into
the drain.
Actions are underway to correctly identify all of the drain covers in this area.
