Subject: RE: Lab Certification
Hi Linda,
It would be difficult without a validated and published reference method to refer to. You could look at the laboratory's
QC protocol and compare to 40 CFR Part 136.7 and determine if the twelve quality control elements considered
essential in this part (e.8, |DO[, IVIDL LR8, K4B, LFB, etc.) are covered. However, without avalidated method, there are
no QC benchmarks to evaluate against in terms of limits of acceptance for those QC elements. You could examine the
laboratory's method validation studies (i.e., K4DLand |DOC); however, here again you would have nothing to evaluate it
against and it would be a judgement call on the reviewer's part. You would really only be judging whether the analysis
meets the OCcriteria the laboratory has established, which might be based on in-house statistics from historical data,
generally two or three standard deviations from the mean, or which may simply be default limits (e.g., 50-200%
recovery).
I am hoping EPA ORD RTP's work may at some point lead to publishing a validated method for GenX and similar
compounds, but that generally takes money for validation studies and time to go through an approval process and from
what I know, there aren't even any standards for most of the other similar compounds. I am not exactly sure what you
are looking at, but EPA ORD RTP would be a good resource for some type of review since they have more experience
with this analysis and/or they may be able to suggest or recommend analytical QC benchmarks that could be adopted
somehow asminimum requirements.
I hope that adequately answers your question. Don't hesitate to give me a call if not.
Regards,
Dana

Is there an ability to conduct a lab certification or other type of review for GenX analysis?
