SUBJECT: Review of Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA or C8) by the NC SAB
Dear Dr. Jordan:
The Division of Water Quality respectfully requests assistance from the North Carolina Science
Advisory Board in assessing the human health risks associated with exposures to Perfluorooctanoic
acid (PFOA). We require a review of PFOA that would be based on findings from a literature search on
perfluorooctanoic acid (C8F1502H), perfluorooctanoate anion (C8F1502), and ammonium
perfluorooctanoate (NH4+, C8F15O2-).
The State of North Carolina has a manufacturer of the compound located in Fayetteville. Recent
surface water samples and ground water monitoring sample have indicated the presence of the
chemical, causing concerns to regulators and to local citizens. With these concerns in mind, we
appreciate the SAB's reliance on current, relevant, peer -reviewed toxicological literature to provide us
with a risk assessment that will be considered by DENR in drafting rules for acceptable human health
protective concentrations for this water pollutant.
