The manhole that is having overflows showed clear signs of repeated overflows that have entered surface waters. There was debris and grease in the manhole which was partially backed up even under normal flow conditions. When the manhole overflows it is a short path to a stormwater culvert which is very close to the Hiwassee River. A local citizen has provided a photo and a video of two recent overflows at the site. This citizen claims that the manhole overflows after most sustained periods of rain. The Town of Murphy has indicated that they will have an engineering evaluation performed to find a solution to the SSOs at this site. The fact that this manhole backs under normal flow conditions with an outlet pipe that is 4" larger than the inlet seems to indicate a restriction in the line. Given the grease and debris seen in the manhole, a partial blockage of line could be the cause of the SSOs. If the line is not blocked, structural changes to the sewer line and/or manholes may be required. The manhole partially backs up under normal flow conditions and it's easy to see how it could overflow under a high flow condition. There seemed to be excessive grease and debris in the manhole, which points to a possible restriction in the line from debris/grease build up.
