SITE REPORT
The applicant owns a lot (approximately 2/3 acre) along
Country Club Drive (Route 1125) near the intersection of Country
Club Road and Route 32-A in Edenton, N.C. This lot is the second
lot landward of the intersection on the east side of Country Club
Drive. Bordering behind the applicant's lot runs a man-made
canal that connects with the Albemarle Sound. The applicant
represents two neighbors, one adjoining his on Country Club Road.
These three lots are the locations for the proposed bulkhead.
The entire shoreline is characterized as upland. The shore
itself, the spoil bank for the original dredging is vegetated
predominantly with trees, Red maple. (Acer rubrum), loblolly
(Pinus taeda) Ash (Fraxinus L.), beech (Fagess L.) with a spotty
ground cover of yard grasses, and a mixture of various small
broadleaved upland plants. The applicant's boat basin does not
flush well into this canal. There are no wetland species of
plants growing in or along the boat basin.
The canal itself is shallow with an average depth of two
feet (-2').
The applicant proposes to dredge the existing canal to a
depth of -5' for a distance of 700' from the canal end toward the
mouth. The depth at this point is 4 to 5 feet and remains this
deep the remaining 1800 ft. of the canal and at the mouth of the
Chowan River. The width of the canal (along the section to be
dredged) is 30 ft. at its widenst point and 18 ft. at its
narrowest. He proposes to bulkhead his property, a portion of
his adjoining neighbor's shoreline and an additional neighbor's
shoreline an average distance of 2' from the existing NWL. The
applicant intends to place the dredged fill behind the original
spoil bank on the eastern side of the canal and behind the
proposed bulkhead which would dissect his existing boat basin.
ANTICIPATED IMPACTS
No coastal wetlands will be impacted by this project.
Dredging will cause temporary turbidity within the existing canal
and will directly impact 12,600 sq. ft. of canal bottom.
Approximately 7,000 sq. ft. of upland area will be covered with
spoil material. There are no archaelogical sites identified on
this site.
