PROJECT SUMMARY: Applicant proposes to repair 3 dolphin clusters. and construct a new dolphin cluster at the Edenton woodyard of Union Camp Corporation. UNION CAMP CORPORATION BIO REPORT PAGE 2 BIO REPORT The applicant owns a 4 acre tract of land south of Edenton on the Albemarle Sound. This tract of land is the location of Union Camp Corporation's timber yard and barge-loading station. The Union Camp Corporation's Edenton woodyard is a temporary storage facility from which logs are loaded onto barges and taken up the Chowan River to Union Camp's mill at Franklin, Virginia. The site is void of any vegetation and appears to be a portion of the old military training facility of the nearby airport. The shoreline is bulkheaded and void of any wetlands. Currently 3 large dolphin clusters extend out into Albemarle Sound to which the barges moor. The farthest dolphin cluster is approximately 360' from the shore. Moored barges extend beyond this last cluster and need additional mooring. The applicant seeks 'to repair/replace the three existing dolphin clusters and construct an additional dolphin cluster approximately 120 from the last cluster. ANTICIPATED IMPACTS A minimal disturbance (150 sq. ft.) will be incurred to the shallow water habitat in the replacement and construction of the dolphin clusters. An additional fixed structure 120' further out into Albemarle Sound may pose a navigational hazard. However, since moored barges currently extend out this far, no greater hazard should be imposed than the barges themselves.
