Pilot Test for diesel fuel recovery
Groundwater Remediation Facilities
Union County
The Non -Discharge Permitting Unit received the pilot test for diesel fuel recovery request on
December 1, 1997 for the Chelsea Labs Facility covered under Permit No. W00010607. The Non -
Discharge Permitting Unit, Groundwater Section and the Mooresville Regional Office have reviewed the
study and found it to be appropriate and hereby grant approval for the study to commence. The following
conditions must be met for this approval to be valid.
1. At stated in the study request, air stripper samples from MW -4 shall be collected after the
inspection tank and air stripper effluent samples and analyzed once every two weeks for
Method 625 plus the 10 largest non -target peaks identified. The information collected shall be
submitted to the Division of Water Quality Mooresville Regional Office's Water Quality Section
and Groundwater Section.
2. Approval for this pilot study is for three months from the date of this letter. This three month
period will allow the pilot study to run as required, an evaluation to be made, and a permit
modification to be requested (if appropriate) for the additional treatment units and the diesel
contamination as a source. Failure to either cease operation or request permit modification to
add this system will be considered a violation of nondischarge permit W00010607.
Please note, construction and operation of this pilot study shall be completed in accordance with
the conditions of the subject permit and the approved plans and specifications. At no time should the
permitted flow or loading rate be exceeded.
