DS AND STORM WAS BRANCH Please reference the Department of the Army (DA) permit issued on December 14, 2001 for the subject project and your request dated November 11, 2008 to perform maintenance dredging of Mason Inlet and Mason Creek on Figure Eight Island, New Hanover County, North Carolina. You have requested the authorization to perform the third maintenance dredging event of the Mason's Inlet system, and shoreline restoration of the south end of Figure "8" Island. The referenced DA permit authorized the relocation of Mason Inlet, excavate Mason Creek, construct a sediment basin, and renourish the southern end of Wrightsville Beach, including maintenance activities for thirty years. In accordance with special condition (3) of this permit, your request to any perform maintenance must include a written report indentifying the need for the maintenance event. Your referenced requests to perform maintenance dredging the Mason Inlet and the Mason Inlet Monitoring report for the period April 2007 to April 2008 satisfies the special condition (3) requirements for a written report. In addition, according to information provided in your narrative sand placed on Figure "8" Island in last years maintenance project (i.e. the project's second maintenance event) was almost completely washed out from Hurricane Hannah and the September 20, 2008 nor'easter. Your narrative also states that since the fall of 2007, the throat of Mason's Inlet has migrated approximately 500-feet south from the northern corridor limits. Thus, you have determined that a third maintenance dredging project is needed. . We have reviewed your request to perform maintenance dredging in accordance with special condition (3) of the subject permit as shown on permit sheets 1-6 dated 10/31/08 (copy attached). Your request includes hydraulic dredging of 57,000 cy from Mason Creek, mechanical dredging of 96,100 cy from Mason Shoal, and hydraulic dredging of 10,600 cy from the AIWW. The dredged sand will be disposed onto the ocean beaches of Figure Eight Island to create an approximate a berm to elevation +6.0 (NGVD) from Station 5+00 to between Station 35+00 and Station 40+00. All dredging and beach disposal activities will be located within the approved dredging areas of this permit and as shown in referenced sheets. -2- Your request to perform maintenance dredging of Mason Inlet and Mason Creek and disposal of this dredged material onto Figure Eight Island is hereby approved. You are reminded that special condition (2) requires that all work be conducted between November 15th and March 30th of any year. In addition, with regard to special condition (12) it is recommended that you contact the North Carolina Resources Commission prior to any work on the beach to ensure your project does not impact any listed Federally endangered species. All other conditions of your Department of the Army permit shall remain in full force and effect. The expiration date of your permit shall remain December 31, 2031.
