Ash Basin Groundwater Assessment
Request for Assessment Suspension
Dear Mr. Pitner:
On April 10, 2013, Duke Energy (Duke) submitted a proposed work plan to conduct an ash basin
groundwater assessment at Marshall Steam Station in Terrell, North Carolina. Duke has received
no response from the North Carolina Department of Environmental and Natural Resources
(NCDENR) concerning the proposed work plan.
On August 16, 2013, NCDENR filed a complaint alleging violations at several Duke coal-fired
stations, including Marshall Steam Station, related to ash basin seepage and groundwater
monitoring data that show some concentrations above groundwater standards. Due to the pending
complaint and associated outcome, Duke requests suspending the proposed assessment work
until the outcome of the outstanding complaint is realized.
