I am in receipt of a Public Notice from the Corps of Engineers in which
"persons desiring to make comment regarding..." are invited to do so to you.
Even though I have on more than one occasion notified, in writing, the Division of
Coast Management of my opposition, I believe it only prudent to officially express
to you my opposition as well.
I am an adjacent landowner and as such intimately familiar with the
proposed development and the surrounding environment. The proposed new
Peninsula project is diametrically opposed to sound development principals. As
you are aware the property is surrounded on three sides by water, water that is
tidal and feeds the marshes, shellfish, birds and the balance of nature in our
estuaries. The land is flat, without dunes or vegetation to absorb runoff the
development can and will pollute and erode the adjacent areas. This is, in my
opinion, a very fragile coastal ecology that must be preserved.
While it is true that our coastal lands are monetarily valuable, we cannot
allow development that is detrimental to the ecology to continue. A fair number
of the local citizens, in fact, derive their livelihood from the adjacent waters. The
approval of this proposed development would mean the loss of an irreplaceable
resource valuable to all the citizens cf North Carolina.
I am therefore opposed to allowing the proposed development to proceed.
If appropriate, I welcome the opportunity to address the issue in more depth
either in writing or through a public forum.
