Project Description
Project Length (lin. Miles or feet): 0.06 Surrounding Land Use: Rural
Proposed Project Existing Site
Project Built-Upon Area ac. 0.23 ac. 0.16 ac.
Typical Cross Section Description: Two-lane 22' asphalt roadway with 4' paved shoulders and 2' turf shoulders Two-lane 20' asphalt paved roadway with 3' turf shoulders.
Average Daily Traffic (veh/hr/day): Design/Future: 4650 Existing: 4300
General Project Narrative: The existing bridge on Highway SR1810 over Allen Creek in Catawba County is proposed to be replaced with a 82 foot two span 21" cored slab bridge. The existing approch
sections of the roadway will be widened from approximately 20ft. To 22ft. The bridge crossing will be widened from 24 ft. to 33 ft. (out to out). The new bridge will have no
deck drains on the bridge. Stormwater runoff will be directed to a 2' ditch lined with rip rap prior to discharging into the stream.
1.) Maximizing shoulder section — A grass shoulder section is utilized on the project to promote diffused passive stormwater treatment.
2.) Minimizing roadway side slopes — Gentle and flat roadside slopes have been utilized to the maximum extent possible in locations while minimizing costs and ensuring safety
for embankment heights.
3.) Assessing and minimizing the impacts of stormwater runoff to environmentally sensitive areas — The stream and tributary within the project limits are bridged and piped in
the current condition. The project results in no new significant impacts to either the stream or tributary. There are no wetlands within the project corridor.
4.) Promoting sensitive intersection of streams - The existing alignment of the stream crossing will be maintained to minimize the bridge length and avoid significant costs and
right of way impacts.
1.) Providing adequate ground cover — Appropriate seed mixtures have been specified for all seasons of planting. Erosion control matting will be utilized to minimize erosion
while vegetation is established.
2.) Stabilizing slopes — Erosion control matting will be utilized on 2:1 slopes.
3.) Providing adequate energy dissipation — Storm water will dissipate across 2:1 slopes and across natural ground on three sides of the bridge. On the north corner, storm
water will be directed into a vegatated ditch that is lined with rip rap below the high water elevation .
4.) Preserving natural features — Existing drainage patterns are maintained.
5.) Maximizing vegetative conveyance — Vegetated ditches are proposed where applicable to promote sedimentation, filtration, and infiltration.
6.) Encouraging diffuse flow — Riprap energy dissipators are utilized to diffuse flow at pipe outlets. No deck drains were required on the bridge.
