Chestnut Park Stream Restoration Project
Chestnut Park, Waynesville, NC
Vegetation Plan
This document outlines the process for establishing and managing streamside vegetation for the
Chestnut Park Stream Restoration Project along Shingle Cove Branch. The Town of Waynesville's
Horticulturalist Qonathan Yates) would manage the plantings to ensure all vegetation is installed and
maintained correctly. Technical consultation would be provided by the Haywood Soil & Water
Conservation District (Duane Vanhook) and Haywood Cooperative Extension Service (Bill Skelton).
Seedin
After final grading at the end of each day, the stream banks would be permanently seeded with
native grasses. Soil impacted by construction would be loosened prior to seeding. Any extraneous
materials would be removed to provide a loose and uniform growing media. Seed would be spread with
a drop -type spreader, and the seed would be lightly raked to cover with soil.
After seeding, the stream banks would be covered with coir matting that is installed using standard
installation practices. Stones, roots, and other extraneous material would be removed to ensure the
matting lies flat on the soil. Trenches (12"-18") would be dug at the top and bottom of the slope to
anchor the matting with back -fill material. Adjacent pieces of matting would be overlapped 12". The
matting would be anchored with wooden stakes spaced 24" apart; stakes in overlapped areas and along
matting edges would be spaced 12" apart; and three stakes would be used at corners.
Woody Vegetation
To provide long-term stability of the stream channel, a mix of native, woody vegetation (trees and
shrubs) would be planted along the entire length of the stream reach. Plantings would occur on the
stream bench, bank slope, and top of bank to provide a 30 foot buffer from the stream edge. Plantings
would occur this fall and winter (2017/2018) after the vegetation has become dormant.
The type of trees and shrubs would include a mix of species listed in Table 1. We estimate
approximately 20 to 40 plants on each side of the stream, depending on species and spacing
requirements. After planting, the soil would be saturated with water and covered with mulch.
Maintenance
The seeded areas would be inspected weekly until the grasses are well-established. Any damaged
areas would be immediately reseeded and, if necessary, covered with coir matting. The woody vegetation
would be monitored for three years post -construction; any dead plants would be immediately replaced.
The grasses and woody vegetation would be watered as necessary, particularly if drought conditions
occur, using the town's landscape watering truck.
