Site: Horsepen Creek Stream & WL Mitig. Project (for Piedmont TriadAirAOrt)
DWO #• 20000846 Date of Report: 1/23/2007 Monitoring Year: 1 & 2
(different sections of proiect are on different timelines)
Reviewer: Tammy Hill Date of Review: 2/06/2007
Background:
- Mitigation plan is missing, therefore success criteria are unclear. Report notes
requirement for wetland hydrology (monitoring well data in App E) & photos (in
App A) of unvegetated areas.
- 401 size/length requirements are not in monitoring report - check file.
Success Criteria:
1. Vegetation
- Report (p. 4) notes bare areas in HPC1 & HPC2, and other areas with high
mortality or low density, are scheduled to be replanted in next 2 months.
- Report (p. 10) refers us to photos in Appendix A & F for photos & data.
o We also need a map detailing photo locations (photos in App A
are labeled as "Photo Point #1", etc.) and transect locations.
o Area sampled for monitoring along transect is very small
("Combined...1/10 acre" per p. 10). Is this representative? I
would like a description of their method.
- Cattails are being cut back & maintained to avoid development of monoculture.
That's good - are they using best methods?
- Photo review - see notes for site visit, below.
2. Hydrology
- Some wells indicated good cycles of saturation/inundation & drying. Others
indicate long periods of standing water. Observe conditions at a site visit, then
revisit well graphs.
3. Soils - Not discussed.
For the site visit:
- HPC2 has very low tree survival or planting density (photos look like mud flats).
Check conditions, and compare with other mitigation areas:
o HPC1: medium survival; photos show development of herbaceous plants
4 trees may be more successful with next planting; data shows status of
living trees is fair
o HPC3: high survival; photos show some areas with woody stems - check
species; data shows status of most trees is good. Photos show some
areas of open water - check for potential issues.
Check cattails & keep an eye out for invasives.
Observe conditions related to hydrologic influences (see notes above).
