Subject:FW: Black project--dimensions of riprap over gabions
Attachments:IMG_6768.JPG
Morning all,
I’m forwarding an email from the agent for the CAMA project for William Black Jr. in Chowan County. There
was a scoping meeting in June for the project concerning rip rap placement along an existing sheetpile wall and
gabions. The forwarded email clarifies rip rap dimensions around the gabions as depicted on the “Typical Gabion Jetty
Stabilization” workplan.
Thanks,
Gregg

Gregg,
Thanks for the inquiries on this. The intention is to adequately cover the gabions with granite NCDOT Class II rip
rap. These granite pieces are generally range from 8” – 16”. This would be the same rock to be used for the entire
project. To cover the gabions entirely with this size rock, we would want to be up to 2.5 ft above NWL. The covering of
the gabions will accomplish 2 objectives, which include strengthening the protective nature of the existing gabion
system and to cover the gabions since the wire baskets will not hold up in the elements for many years to come. This
area of rock is not supported by the existing bulkhead, but the cross section attempts to show the bulkhead and
concrete cap in the foreground. See attached photo. Since there is not a vertical support on one side of this, we would
request the total maximum width (base footprint) to be 15’, where the inside of the gabion area rock would line up close
to the inside of the concrete cap that follows the existing bulkhead wall. Let me know if this makes sense. I can send
more photos and if needed, we can add some dimensions to the cross-section.
Thanks,
Brian

Hey all,
Where I was confused was…
1. The 18” reference does not extend to the top of the rip rap cap
2
2. The 18” starts at the top of the gabion and doesn’t seem to include the NWL, so I wasn’t sure of the height
above NWL
3. I was not sure if the sheetpiling wall extended to the gabions. Based on the drawing the rip rap extends to the
other side of the wall, and the aerial imagery was inconclusive. So I wasn’t sure if the 12’ width applied here as
well.
I wasn’t aware of the scoping meeting for this one, which probably would have answered my questions. So I
appreciate the extra time in helping me get up to speed on this one.
Thanks,
Gregg

Greg,
On the ‘Typical Gabion Jetty Stabilization’ there is reference to an 18” height for a portion of the cap.
And if one were to subtract 3’ from the 12’ measurement at the bottom, it would give us 9’ across.
o But I know these measurements may not be accurate, therefore I’m cc’ing Brian Rubino at Quible for
clarification on your question.
Brian, appreciate any updates you can give us on this!

Hey Yvonne,
For my own info, do you have the dimensions of the rip rap over the gabions, (width, height above NWL)? The
cross section isn’t scaled.
Thanks,
Gregg
