Thanks Jerry. I appreciate the quick action on the part of NCDOT and its contractors. I
also appreciate the before and after pictures. I plan to visit U-2524D on my next
compliance visit. Hope to see you then.

Subject: [Non-DoD Source] U-2524D Slope Failure
Hello All,
Due to the recent rain events (over 2.8 inches over the last two days), NCDOT
experienced a slope failure at Site 9 on project U-2524D. It appears that most of the
sediment eroded down the slope and deposited on either side of the stream banks
behind the silt fence (see slope failure pictures). However, due to the large amount of
sediment and rain, the fence was overtopped and undercut in some areas which
allowed some sediment to undoubtedly reach the stream based on the thin layers of silt
on some of the riprap. There must have been significant velocity during the rain event
because the sediment did not appear to severely deposit in any particular areas and
evidently washed down stream. I walked several hundred yards downstream of the site
and did not notice any significant sediment buildup that would have appeared to come
from the site (see repair pictures). NCDOT has repaired the slope and removed the
deposited sediment from behind the silt fences (see repair pictures). The slope is also
scheduled to be matted and seeded. The silt fence has been repaired or replaced as
necessary (see repair pictures). In addition, a berm has been installed at the top of the
slope and an additional slope drain has been added to help divide the stormwater and
send it to different basins. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments,
suggestions or if you would like to visit the site.
