The bridge is designed as wide as can be designed for a cored slab bridge. The drainage spread along the bridge extends
into the travel way. Thus, there is a safety issue with hydroplaning. The bridge cannot get any wider and we need to get
the water off the bridge to prevent accidents.

The Bingham Road (SR 1141) culvert was blown out during Hurricane Matthew. We had reviewed the site with the large
void in the roadway and the aluminum culvert mangled and twisted up in the remnants of the former dam
impoundment. After reviewing the project it has been determined that a bridge structure would be a better fit. The
existing sanitary sewer (gravity) cannot be worked around.
The Design-Build Group has prepared a RFP and short listed three design-build groups to compete for the project. As
mentioned below by Virginia Mabry, the bridge has been set at the maximum width for cored slabs and the preliminary
spread calculations indicate that deck drains will be required. Typically, the Department does not provide deck drains
over a stream, but in this case there are no other options.
We will need to discuss this issue next week on the 17tn

Hi Jim,
For the Bingham Dr Bridge project to replace the blown out culvert, if spread becomes an issue can you coordinate with
the agencies to see if deck drains over the water would be allowed if there is no other option. We are already out the
maximum bridge width for cored slabs units and if the spread calculations end up showing a need for a wider bridge this
will not be an option.
After you have had a chance to discuss, I will update hydro scope with what we find out.
Thank you,
Virginia
