It is our opinion that the fish tissue monitoring of the- Dan River should continue at all stations. This monitoring can be scaled down from the current level of twice a year to only once a year _and the analysis needs to be only for selenium. This recommendation is made because tissue concentrations of selenium at the first station below the ash basin discharge are still elevated 3-4 times the upstream concentations. 4 t North Carolina Division of Environmental Management Water Quality Section / Environmental Sciences Branch Ecosystems Analysis Unit / Intensive Survey Group May 22, 1989 MEMORANDUM To: Tom Stockton Thru: Ken Eagleson Jim Overton Jay Sauber From: Mike Wicker 0(14 Subject: Characterization of Water Chemistry and Biota of Belews Lake Two Years After Installation of Dry Fly -ash Collection System at Belews Creek Station -1988 Recommendations #1 and # 2 should be allowed under the condition that some effort be used to address chronic exposure problems as evidenced by reproductive capabilities. It should be left up to the Duke staff to decide on the most efficient way to accomplish this goal. A couple of techniques that could be used are 1.) monitoring between year trends in selenium in the ripe ovaries of largemouth bass ;collected from the lake during the spawning season 2.) using enclosures to hold adult largemouth bass during the 90 days prior to spawning and then determing the reproductive fitness of these individuals!'in ponds.
