I’ve attached some documents to this email regarding Bridge 254 in Guilford County on Ferguson Road. While we were at the preconstruction site meeting yesterday, we discovered that in the northeast quadrant of the project there is not enough room to construct the wing wall. Therefore, after an emergency meeting with the designer and the team members, we have pulled together a revised set of buffer drawings and updated the summary sheet to show this additional area need for construction 1 (263 square feet in Zone 1). The design engineer has offered the below narrative (based upon our onsite discussions yesterday) as to the need for this slight increase. It is my hope that we can handle this via email – however, if you need me to resubmit everything, please let me know. I’ve also included the original DWR authorization. Thank you so much! You will note the additional buffer impact area has been added as a separate line in the summary. Below is the accompanying narrative for the additional area: On the NE quadrant of the subject project, existing ground is approximately 8-10’ higher than the bottom of footing elevation for the proposed culvert wing wall. Excavation for the wing wall must be sloped back for worker safety, thus resulting in buffer impacts beyond those initially anticipated for the project. Consideration was given to utilizing sheet piling to contain the excavation and limit buffer impacts, however the presence of aerial power and telecommunication lines directly over the end of the proposed culvert precludes the installation of sheet piling. Upon completion of the construction of the culvert and wing wall, the areas excavated within the buffer will be backfilled, restored to natural contours and seeded with native grasses per the project special provisions. Please advise if you have any questions or need additional information. We greatly appreciate your help in submitting this information to the agencies and coordinating their review and approval.
