I write to you in response to Alcoa Power Generating, Inc.'s ("APGI") request for a
Section 401 water quality certification. I am concerned about the impact the certification
may have on Badin Lake and related water bodies in the Yadkin River.
I grew up in the town of Badin, home of the Alcoa plant. I am now 47 years old, but as a
kid I played golf at the Stanly County Country Club with many Alcoa employees. For
years I heard the veteran Alcoa employees talk about mysterious waste products that
were dumped around the town of Badin. They told me that this waste was used as fill dirt
for a local softball field and to fill low areas in yazds of several residences in the area.
Many of these veteran employees are dead. But there are still some that know the details
of these stories. These details need to be investigated. In any case, it is well known that
the operation of the Badin Works resulted in contamination both on the site of the facility
and in the water supply.
I ask that you deny APGI's request far a Section 401 water quality certification. Time
needs to be taken to fully evaluate the environmental impacts to the Yadkin basin and our
region from the Badin Works operations and APGI's hydro dams, including information
that Stanly County has uncovered in recent months. Current conditions need to be
corrected to protect the health of people in our region.
Sincerely,
~~
