Mrs. Wheeler,

NICHOLAS J. TENNYSON
Secretary
The attached Pre-Construction Notification (PCN) Form is to request a Nationwide 35 Permit to
perform maintenance dredge activities along a portion of the old North Carolina Ferry Division
"Short Route" channel that travels from the North end of Ocracoke Island to the South end of
Hatteras Island.
Dredging the proposed portion of the channel as depicted in the attached surveys will allow for the
safe passage of public and private fishing vessels as they travel through the Hatteras Inlet. Due to
the volatile nature of the Inlet and continuous shoaling there is not a safe or reliable route for
vessels to take that gains them access to deep water through the Hatteras Inlet.
Surveys were performed on June ls` of 2016 and show that approximately 40,000 cubic yards of
material will need to be excavated from the West end of the channel. The excavation will follow
the current permitted dimensions of 150' wide and a-12' depth. The length of this area is 600'.
Dredging operations will be completed by the NCDOT Ferry Division - Dredge Carolina, which is
a pipeline dredge. Dredging in this same vicinity was completed in early 2016.
Sincerely,
-
